The weekend before last we went camping not far from where we live, just a short trip up Logan Canyon to Tony Grove Lake. We had never camped there before and found out it's a really nice campground.
We got went up Friday afternoon after the boys got out of school. And can I just say how nice it is to load up while they are at school!? So much easier to get everything ready to go.
I even made tin foil dinners before we headed out and just packed them in the cooler ready to go.
Anyway when we got up there we set up our tent and got the beds all ready etc, then the boys and Lars went hunting for squirrels. That ended up being the highlight of the trip for them.
And kind of nice for me that they were entertained, I started and made it through half of a good book :)
And just tried to ignore what was happening to the poor squirrels.
So while they were out hunting, I got our tin foil dinners cooking.
They turned out really good and the boys even said they loved them!
Lars' had more stuff packed into it than the rest of ours, so his didn't cook quite as well, but the rest of them were good.
Then we did something different for dessert...we made campfire cones. So the boys each filled an ice cream cone with peanut butter, chocolate chips and marshmallows, then we wrapped them in foil and put them in the fire to warm up. They turned out yummy too. Kind of fun to do something different and they liked making their own...
I think it started sprinkling right about the time when we were getting ready for bed, then ended up raining pretty much all night long that first night! The tent is waterproof and we didn't get wet or anything, but it's pretty loud on the tent and it kept Lars and me awake a lot. The boys of course slept like little logs like they always do.
Kind of a pain to deal with everything being all wet when we got up in the morning, but it dried out pretty quick.
Lars made pancakes, eggs and sausage for breakfast...
...then I walked around the campground and they all went off squirrel hunting again. Gunnar came back with a tiny little chipmunk clutched in his little hand by the tail looking so proud because he'd actually shot it himself. He is a good little shot!
Lars skinned them and dried out the furs for them to bring home. Gross I know, but they were beyond excited about their new treasures...
That afternoon we walked the short distance over to the lake and they boys played around there for a little while...
...then we came back to camp and roasted hotdogs and marshmallows.
Then since it didn't rain too much that night, we slept much better and got up and packed all of our stuff up and were out of camp by 8:30, so that we could get the boys back for church class.
We love camping and can't wait till next year!
Well Lars actually gets to go again tomorrow for his deer hunt, so maybe we'll go join him for a night...we'll see.
